Town Set to Enact new MF Code...Again

Dear Community Members

As a long time advocate for true community-based planning, ABCO  has serious concerns regarding the proposed changes to the Town's Multi-family Code.  A public hearing for a new MF Code is scheduled for tomorrow evening ,Tuesday May 21st.  Public hearings begin at 6:30 Pm and each member of the public has only 5 minutes to express their concerns and objections.

As part of our response to the proposed Code change, we're enclosing   ABCO Director and EMPOA Vice President, James Gleason's comments as  presented in a concise letter objecting to the consideration of this MF legislation at this time and without sufficient data to warrent any changes.  Based on the many factors outlined below we believe that  this proposad is premature at best.

Most glaringly it once again appears to have been developed by special interest, for special interests and without any input for the civic community or even the public at large. (See worksession comments).   Please note there is no corresponding verification expressed by the Town Board that the communities have been consulted and  'are comfortable' with the proposed changes.

We believe that virtually none of the data we and many citizens demanded and requested that the Town collect and make planning staff  provide and  precisely identify more than a year ago has yet to be even made available.  The only explanation provided by the Planning Commissioner justifing these changes is that the present code  is 'under utilized by the development community" .  Presently many areas of our town and communities are already considered as seriously over developed.

Considering the issues we now face with intense traffic congestion, the high density housing already in place or proposed, the increased pollution of our ground and surface waters, along with the corresponding impact on taxes and government services that more high density housing development is likely to present; no consideration of changing the MF code should be considered.  Unless and until the data justifying such a change is made available, the town should not schedule any public hearing on enacting a new MF code. Rather, first hearings and data must be presented  on the issue of any real need for it.  This issue needs much discussion.

We believe that  the stated reasons for changing the MF code appear to be incredibly insufficent on their face  to form a realistic basis to  re-design the MF code.

Attached and enclosed is the letter drafted by Mr. Gleason and endorsed by EMPOA and ABCO.  Please feel free to circulate to your civic members and community and to use and incorporate into correspondence or in person statements to the town regarding this most important issue.  Copies will be available at tonight's ABCO meeting at the CORAM FIREHOUSE.

Please correspond with the town and make plans to attend tomorrow's town board meeting.  In light of the time restrictions in place and the inability of civics to cede time to a representative speaker, it is imperative that the civic communtiy and the public let their voices be heard...that means we need a signigicant showing to defeat this plan in its present form and to secure true community-based planning for our town.

It is time to finally put an end to back-room planning and deals with the special interest groups.

The Town's "Novus"webpage--the one with the agendas--has a new feature  that started yesterday.

There has been a continuing problem.  The Town Board agendas are not available on the page if they are being worked o or if the system hasn't been closed  after being worked on.

Because the resolution agenda seems to undergo constant changes right up to the last minute, it has regularly been unavailable as required, especially during the work day on Fridays, Mondays and Tuesdays  before a Town Board  meeting.

Going forward, there is to be a separate link for the latest pdf of the resolution agenda for use when the Novus resolution agenda is offline.

You'll find it near the top of the page:   http://www.brookhaven.org/Live/AgendaPublic.aspx

The pdf link may actually be a few hours old, and may not be current, but at least it will be available    constantly in some form. We do not know when the first pdf will be posted for a  particular meeting.

Also, Town Hall is now an Optimum WiFi Hotspot.  So you can view the agendas at the meetings if you have a device for accessing the internet using WiFi.

Kevin McAllister Named Environmentalist of the Year
Kevin McAllister named environmentalist of the year by North Fork Environmental Council

Red Tide
Come out on Thursday May 16th from 7:00-9:00pm at Suffolk County Community College's Culinary Arts and Hospitality Center in Riverhead, NY.  ABCO is a proud supporter of the Peconic Baykeeper and the tireless work he  has done and continues to do in our town.  Kevin has been the truest voice for the Forge and Carmans Rivers , our Bays as most recently the Breach at Old Inlet....in our town...our Baykeeper.  Kevin McAllister grew up in Brookhaven, in Center Moriches...We treasure him and are so proud of all the work he's done and the difference his activism makes in our communities.  We are proud to call him partner and friend!

The NFEC's Richard Noncarrow Environmentalist of the Year Award will be presented to Kevin McAllister, Peconic Baykeeper, for his long-standing and continued efforts to protect our waters and the wildlife which subsists in it. Kevin, celebrating his 15th year as Peconic Baykeeper, has spent the past four years working feverishly to make the connection between the quality of our ground waters and the water quality of our ponds, streams, inlets and bays to elected officials, residents and businesses alike in numerous public meetings and presentations across Suffolk County. Whether working to help protect and preserve the Carmans River, the Peconic estuary or the quality of our ground/drinking water, Kevin has consistently demanded that both measurement of the problems and foundation of their solutions be based on science and not on emotion or politics. Kevin's leadership on these and other issues of special interest to the North Fork and Suffolk County, as a whole, makes him a most deserving recipient of this award.

"Kevin wears his passion on his sleeve, but it's his work ethic, his dedication to doing what is right and his ability to challenge us to be better stewards of our lands and waters, of our future, which makes him stand head and shoulders above the rest," Bill Toedter, NFEC president, said in a press release.
